Phew! Another Friday! Its been a long week.. we did with school, but it has just been a long week.

Mid week… Ah, we made it… been a bit challenging this week.

Well we made it through Christmas! Hope everyone had a great Christmas, we sure did. However, we are not taking any time off, cause we had the two weeks off before.

Today is our first day off, after having a few weeks off while I waited for my Toner cartridge to come in to make copies!

We love being in 4H… as we are able to do lots of things we normally wouldn’t be able to do..
Yesterday we were suppose to go to a Bakery and do some cookie and cupcake decorating. However… due to the owner getting the flu, we were not able too.
Having made 149 cookies and 82 cupcakes, I was rather bummed.. but we decided to just met at one of the leaders houses, and decorate them on our own then.
Here is some of the stuff the kids did…
During our first 8 weeks of school this year, we were doing History with Story of the world.. During that time, we were learning about “Egyptian” history.
Well a few weeks ago, a friend of mine said don’t you use Story of the World? I told her we did, we were just currently on a break from History and doing Geography… She then proceeded to tell me they were going to do a Mummification of a Chicken project cause they to were on the Egyptian section. Would we like to join them? Well, since when do we turn down a fun project right??
We bought all the necessary ingredients and meet at her house one morning. This project takes a lot of salt, baking powder and baking soda. Plus of course a chicken!
First we had to wash the chicken off, and pat it dry. Then you rub the chicken in Alcohol, so that it can help kill bacteria.
Then the fun begins!
You have to mix the salt, powder, and salt together.. and you can add in spices if you want, to help with smell. We put in cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Then you fill up the cavitity with the mix…
Put the chicken in a gallon size bag, and dump the rest of the mix in.. if it does not cover the chicken, add salt to cover the chicken.
Then put it in another bag.. and seal.
Let it set for a day, and remove it..
Take wet salt off it, and remix some salt, powder, and soda. (with spices if you want) and repackage it in new bags… and leave it for 2 days.. Repeat again… then set for 5 days.. Repeat, and then you should be able to leave it for the next 4-5 weeks. Yup I said weeks!!!
In the mean time… You can make an oil Jar to use before you wrap the chicken in a few weeks.
You just take some fresh herbs.. and put them in a jar.. and cover them in oil. Leave it in a window with sunlight, and shake a few times a day!

Your going to notice there is a week missing in-between our last day of school. We had to take an impromptu week off, so I didn’t have a nervous break down. It was time to take a break. Here we are, feeling much more refreshed!

Another new week is upon us…

I counted this as a day of school for Monkey Man.. but the girls did not attend with us.
Our 4H group put on a “Goat School” taught by Ken & Janice Spaulding. They are famous for teaching all over the world. From here in our backyard, to California, all the way to China.
Well they usually do a 2 day class at their farm, however the cost is quite considerable. They condensed the information and made it kid friendly and presented it to a few 4H members, their families, and local community members that were interested.
Monkey Man, has been wanting goats and I’m not so keen on the idea. They are a lot of work, and unless you are going to sell them, or milk them they do not really help pay for themselves per say. He wanted to attend this workshop, and I figured, its knowledge and since when should I deny him knowledge right?
So off we went! He learned everything from feeding, breeding, milking, and how to trim their hooves. He really enjoyed the class, and took away some great information.

Did you all have a good Halloween? Are the kids all hopped up on sugar now? We had a good time, and got to spend some time with some friends. The kids only had one piece of candy, and they were happy! (Now mom & dad have to try not to eat it all LOL)

She turns 8! So we will have a special dinner, and cake for her later. She had her birthday party this past weekend.

Today we went on a field trip to the Maine State Museum again. Today was Earth Science Day, and the kids were very excited.

We are trying out a new Art Program it’s the “See the Light” Art Class on Dvd . This will cover us for a few weeks, and then we will decide from there where to go. In hopes to get some Art in during 4H this year! So many good things coming!! So Excited!

They are loving putting this Butterfly Lapbook together. Plus we are watching some “Wolly Bear” Caterpillars in our classroom.

We have decided to tweak this next 8 weeks, and do Geography and then we will pick up History again the next time. We think alternating will keep us on our toes, and interested!

We had a great first day back to school! The kids did a great job adapting back to it.
We went on another Field Trip today!
This time we went to the local Apple Orchard for a tour of there facility. They taught the kids a great deal about how to keep the trees, safe and healthy. I even learned a few things!
Then they took them into the building and explained how the apples get from the trees to the store. It was a really nice tour. My two older kids were listening all ears! It was great!
It was a great morning despite the drizzle and gloomy overcast clouds!

Well we have started our 2 week vacation before heading into our next 8 weeks of school.. but that doesn’t mean learning stops right??
Today we went on a field trip with our local homeschool group, to a local theatre. I had never been there before, and was excited to see how good they were.
We saw the play 3 Little Pigs, and I loved how they made it more modern, yet keeping most of the story line. Absolutely funny characters, and a really good play. The kids loved it too.
I think my mom and I are going to look into getting season passes for next year to this local theatre now, so we can go together.
